It took a jury only an hour Friday to decide Ryan Gerald Russell did kill former Boaz resident Katherine Gillespie. The 37-year old Russell was found guilty of capital murder, jurors believing prosecutors' case placing the blame for Gillespie's shooting death on him. Gillespie was 11 on the date of her death -- June 16, 2008. Her body was found stuffed in a trashcan in the rear of Russell's SUV parked in his rental home’s garage.
Russell was Gillespie’s second cousin who had pledged to adopt the girl following the death of her mother. Gillespie had lived in Boaz for a while with a grandmother and attended Boaz Intermediate School. In August 2007, she moved to Inverness to live with Russell.
Prosecutors will seek the death penalty in the case.
