A Marshall County man was released from prison Friday after spending 17 years behind bars, much of it on death row. Larry Randell Smith was convicted in 1996 of the robbery and shooting death of his friend, Dennis Harris. A successful appeal of his capital murder conviction allowed him to plead guilty to a lesser charge. Prosecutors say they went along with the deal because the victim's mother agreed to it. Diane Maier does not believe that Smith killed her son and believes he can help authorities find out who did.
