Officers kill DeKalb man

A DeKalb County man who aimed a gun at officers during a foot chase on Friday was shot and killed. Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in a news release that a DeKalb deputy and a state trooper tried to stop a four-wheeler being driven by Monroe Curtis Smith on state Highway 117 in the Ider area. With the officers in pursuit, Smith turned onto a secondary road, then onto private property. The officers saw Smith pick up a firearm before abandoning his vehicle and when they approached, they say he pointed it at them and ignored commands to drop it. That's when they opened fire. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
